My Work
A native Rochesterian, Marlene Caroselli has only recently found art. Before that, she used the degree she earned at the University of Rochester to land corporate teaching positions and to get her foot in the publishing door. After 60 books, though, she decided it was time to turn from head-pursuits to pursuits involving the heart and the hands. Art now consumes her heart, her hands, and her head!

Background
The river of creativity has many tributaries. One of the streams running into my own artistic-consciousness is the inclination to use “found objects” – things I’d rather recycle than reject in the name of art. Too old and too rebellious to follow traditional art dictates, I enjoy experimenting. Therein lies the thrill for me.

Another stream is the fabric I inherited from my mother, she of the eight-grade education who wound up selling an invention to a major manufacturer when she was 75. My mother typified the words of Thomas Edison: “Inventing is not hard. All you need is a good idea and a lot of junk.”

We had one large room of our house devoted to that junk. My father entered it one day and began scolding her. “You have bolts of fabric here from wedding gowns you made 50 years ago! The drawers are so full of ribbons and scissors and buttons and zippers—you can’t even close them. Take my advice,” he lectured, “if you haven’t used something in the last year, get rid of it!”

She daggered him with a scornful look. “I haven’t used you in the last 20 years,” she observed. “Should I get rid of you?” The argument ended with that query.

  Material Lady
As you can see, this figure is composed of materials, flower- crumbles, and dried leaves. (I could live to be 1,000 and still not use up all the recycled mateirals I've put aside for art!)

Fan-Tastic
This acrylic painting is festooned with handmade paper and a fan that was on its way to a new home in the trash. It's another example of recycling, this time with the most vibrant of colors.

MADAME BUTTERFLY
Her dress is adorned with butterflies cut from second- generation scraps of fabric, while the small fan is one my inventive mother made from first-generation scraps.

DOGGED WOULDS
This elongated acrylic image is embellished with lavender, lace, dogwood blossoms and other
found objects. She serves as a reminder of the determination needed to make "woulds" and "shoulds" completed projects
.

Wind Whisperer
With her upturned face, this figure appears to be whispering into the wind. Her body is decorated with "found" objects--fabric and leaves among them

KIN-DRED SPIRITS
Adorned with tassels, thread, fabric, and leaves from the greenery outside our front door, this acrylic- on-canvas lady contains many re-purposed materials.
